We Are Better Than This

Stop the theft! Stand up for creativity! Shape a better future!

As artists and citizens, we think that our intellectual property rights, our rights to privacy and our right to work and live dignified lives as human beings come before Big Tech’s desire to get ever more powerful.

This statement would seem to be an obvious thing to say, but, worringly, the reality we are living in is looking more and more upside down.

That’s why today we are launching We Are Better Thank This, a campaign that invites everyone to take a stand against the intrusion of tech corporations into every aspect of our lives.

Tech companies have grabbed the opportunity to shape a narrative that suits their needs. They want the tools they make to look inevitable, impossible to shape in any other way.

It is important to resist this characterisation: a society should always be able to decide what tool to adopt on the basis of their actual utility: we get to weigh up their pros and cons.

When it comes to generative AI, this debate didn’t happen. These tools were just dumped on us, while public concerns were suffocated by the clamour of the marketing machine. But we are not supposed to take the good with the bad, we can decide what serves our needs, and the rest can get lost.

The future isn’t set in stone, if we don’t like the direction of things, we - together - can change it.
